Getting into the finish work

My aim is to try to write shorter posts more frequently. This time around, it is more about small victories. The septic system is FINALLY completed and permitted. This is the only category that requires permitting in this county out of the entire build. Apparently there were issues with location of the main water line, the setback for the lake waterfront, and the number and types of sprayers. It took months to get it installed and several weeks to get that all worked out. Now I need to connect the plumbing from the house to the septic and it should be a working system.

My intention was to start on tiling in the bathrooms. A misplaced trowel prevented that, but it is prepped and ready to go for this weekend. I did get the shower door installed in the first floor bath and got both vanity setups completed in the meantime. It isn’t much, but I was glad to be able to work in some small Buster + Punch details to the bathrooms. I used their bulbs over the kitchen island. I think some nice little details like that, plus some Moen and Kohler fixtures will elevate them just enough. Once I get tile in, it should be relatively painless to get the vanities set and connected. So this weekend will likely be tiling and plumbing focused.

I also completely finished the kitchen. Everything works, which is no small feat considering that the tankless water heater, stovetop, microwave / oven combo, garbage disposal, sink, and lighting are all part of a kitchen like this. I damaged the butcher block countertop at the sink a while back when I was cutting out and trimming what I call the skylight. It is an opening to the second floor, right in front of a glass door, so it gets a good amount of natural light. I let a large piece of metal slip while working on it and that gashed the countertop along the edge. I have since repaired that, so I just need to stain and seal it to finish it off. Other than a faulty light bulb that needed replacing, that completes the kitchen. Having a working kitchen is always at the top of the list for any build, so it is a relief to have that all working.

Maybe after this weekend, I can post at least one complete bathroom. Fingers crossed.
